Join us live at Smiths Alternative for two fresh local poetic voices: Sophie Mackay and Emily Bourke.

Sophie is a Canberra local with a lifelong passion for reading. That early love of the written word eventually expanding into writing across a variety of formats from stories to poetry and even non-fiction. A DJ who used to play fundraising events for Muscular Dystrophy at The Basement as well as the Unclothed events at Smith’s and a few other local events. Her stories have been published as part of the Body Image Body Scrimmage initiative to raise awareness of mental health issues in high school children, the University of Canberra’s First anthology of short stories. Her poetry was first published in BMA magazine as the flagship piece for their By The Fireside feature in 2017.

Emily is a Canberra based poet, who explores the ways in which nature connects people and can create space for shared emotion. She writes about the environment, life, and all the bits in-between. Her work has been published in the poetry journal Not Very Quiet, and she has featured at Paris Lit Up.

And don’t forget to bring your own work to share at the ever-popular, ever-amazing open mic!

Places are limited and it is best to book in advance through Smiths Alternative.
