The event will include an introduction from Professor Peter Otto from the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne, and poetry readings from three poets featured in the exhibition:

The poets and artists featured in Finding Our Words challenge the endlessly malleable nature of language. Poetry, prose and spoken word pieces are curated with visual arts in unexpected ways, evoking emotion and expanding our understanding and perspectives around mental health issues. Themes of trauma, grief, stigma and belonging are explored.
In the words of our Director Charmaine Smith “This is an exciting exhibition for us as it’s the first time that The Dax Centre has explored the link between the visual and written arts in such an integrated way. Visitors to the exhibition will come away with new insights and understanding of mental health issues, and will be incredibly moved and inspired by the depth of both the visual and poetry works that are in the Collection.”

Finding Our Words is a new art exhibition from the Cunningham Dax Collection.
Words hold power. Conveying meaning and creating connection, they offer a means of articulating our inner experience and processing our world. Yet words are not absolute, beneath them lies a myriad of alternative spaces where we can explore new possibilities of expression. The poets and artists featured in Finding Our Words traverse this space, challenging the endlessly malleable nature of language. Poetry, prose and spoken word pieces are curated with visual arts in unexpected ways, evoking emotion and expanding our understanding and perspectives around mental health issues. Themes of trauma, grief, stigma and belonging are explored.
The exhibition includes painting on canvas, watercolour, drawing, ceramic, poetry, video, audio and an immersive projection room.There will be examples of acrostic and ekphrastic poetry. One unique aspect of the exhibition is the Poetry Forest, an interactive and suspended installation in one section of the gallery space where visitors can contribute to a community poem.
