Josh Stenberg is talking to Sydney University’s Poetry and Poetics Network about key contemporary Chinese poets who he has been invited to translate.
Translation as Research Method in Contemporary Chinese Poetry
This presentation is drawn from Josh Stenberg’s work translating four living Mainland Chinese poets: Dujia, Tu Guoping, Huang Fan, and Jiang Tao, ranging in age from 35 to 55. The work of these mid-career poets shows a variety of styles now current in Chinese poetry, including abstract, sociocritical, and pastoral. Drawing from the insights gained from translation and from interaction with these poets, Josh will consider questions of translation/translatability as well as the transnational hierarchies and networks of publishing and translating contemporary Chinese poetry, with reference to his working drafts.
Josh Stenberg is a Lecturer in Chinese Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures. Besides literary translation, his research interests include Hokkien, Southeast Asian Chinese, and Chinese transnational literature and theatre.
